Commission a Work of Art

A custom painting that tells your story, brings to life a fond memory, or contributes to the beauty in your home is truly an honor to create with you. I am looking forward to working with you!

I am currently accepting a very limited number of landscape, seascape or floral commissions. Booking through May 2024. Spots are limited.

The Process

STEP One Apply: This is the first step, and you’re in the right spot! Please read through all the content of this page and fill out the form below. Serious inquiries only, please. I will be in touch via the email you provide. You will typically see a response within 72hrs.

Inspiration and Photographs: I am currently accepting landscape, seascape or floral commissions.

This is one of my favorite parts of the process: determining what to paint! The more insight and inspiration you can provide at the start the better! If there are color schemes you love, specific colors (or lack thereof) that you enjoy in your home, or a specific mood you wish to see in your artwork, I want to hear about all the details of your vision! If you’re uncertain, a great place to start is by looking at my instagram @SarahCNightingale or my art prints and seeing what you’re drawn to most. If you’re still unsure, don’t worry! My job as the artist is to turn even the most simple idea into a beautiful masterpiece! :)

For landscape and seascape paintings, I typically work directly from your photographs (and only sometimes mine.) Please note: I cannot paint from images that you do not hold copyright (ie. photographs taken by anyone other than you.) However, oftentimes my paintings come together via multiple photographs. I am happy to make lighting adjustments, create a more dynamic composition, change the mood, add a different sky, paint with a custom color scheme, etc.

For floral paintings, I like to source real flowers from a wholesaler and then photograph them or paint them from viewing them directly in my studio. Occasionally if a flower variety is unavailable (due to the season or otherwise,) we can source a quality, faux variety. Please note that floral paintings will have an additional fee for sourcing and an additional 2 week production time at the start.

Size: I am currently only accepting commissions 16” x  20” or larger. If you have a specific place in your home for your painting and are unsure of the correct size, I am happy to help you determine that size. I also recommend using painter’s tape from a hardware store to mark a rectangle (or square) on your wall; this gives you a very good visual of how a particular size will fill your space. Remember to include the width of a frame in your measurement!

Pricing: Commissioned paintings start at $885 (with a minimum canvas size of 11” x 14”.) A 30% non-refundable deposit is required to begin. The remaining balance, (plus shipping* if outside the continental US,) is due once your painting is complete and before shipment.

STEP TWO Preliminary Hello From Me:

After I receive your application, I will follow up via email to confirm the details of your commissioned artwork and or answer any questions you may have had in the application process.

STEP THREE Deposit and Scheduling:

After your application has been received and the details confirmed, a 30% non-refundable deposit will be due and your commission will be scheduled. Commissions are scheduled first come, first serve, and priority is given as deposits are paid. I am currently booking start dates through June 2021.

STEP FOUR Sketch and Preliminary Approval:
Approx. 2 weeks from receiving your deposit or two weeks from your scheduled start date, I will email you images of a small painted sketch based on our preliminary emails and the form you fill out below. This small sketch will reflect the mood, composition, and colors of your final painting. This part of the process is a great way for us to make sure we’re on the same page visually, and make any large or small adjustments before I begin your painting. (Painted sketches are not included in the shipment of your commissioned painting.)

STEP FIVE In The Studio: After the small painted sketch is approved by you via email, I begin my work! :) Please allow 6-10 weeks from sketch approval until you hear from me for the reveal. Occasionally I will share progress and sneak peeks on my Instagram stories @SarahCNightingale, be sure you’re following along!

STEP SIX Reveal! Revisions or Final Approval: The big day arrives! Images of your painting at various angles and detail shots will be sent via email. This is where we can chat about any last minute adjustments, if needed. If there are no adjustments needed, this is where you can give the artwork your final stamp of approval!

*It very rarely happens that further adjustments are needed; however, if you do request adjustments that I determine to be extensive, there will be an additional charge.

STEP SEVEN Final Payment and Shipment: Once I receive your final stamp of approval via email, the remaining balance of your painting (plus shipping* if outside the continental US) will be due. Please allow 2 weeks from the time of payment before receiving a tracking code. Your painting will be varnished when I receive your final approval and needs time to dry before being packaged and shipped.

*Shipping is FREE within the continental US. All artwork is sent via UPS or Fedex and is insured.

*For artwork being shipped outside of the continental US, you are responsible for paying for the cost of shipping. Once the artwork size is determined, I am able to quote you a shipping rate upon request, as it is determined by size, weight, and delivery destination. All international artwork is sent via UPS, DHL, Fedex or USPS, and insurance is required.
